Gale-force winds and brisk conditions welcomed anglers to the official Wisconsin fishing opener and the first annual Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame 2010 Hayward Crappie Contest on Saturday in Hayward, Wis.

With hundreds of registrants entering the contest, a total of six winners took the stage during the official weigh-in ceremony at the FWFHOF. The atmosphere was warmed though with the cool sounds of Molly Otis and the bright smiles worn by fisherman wetting lines for the first time this fishing opener.

Nationally-televised and noted outdoorsman Ron Schara emceed the event, greeting anglers with wit and humor during the weigh-in ceremony.

Recognized with awards and topping the field at this year’s event were:

Gary Dubois will also have his name etched on the 2010 Hayward Crappie Contest Championship Cup which will remain on display at the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame Museum in perpetuity.

“We had great support for this first ever crappie fishing event,” said FWFHOF Executive Director Emmett Brown. “We survived the tough winds and things came together. We are especially thankful to Holiday Stationstores for its support in being the exclusive registration outlet for the contest. We look forward to bringing this event back to the Hayward lakes area again next year.”

The Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame is a 501(c)3 non-profit museum and home to Hayward’s landmark four-story-tall musky famous around the world. Since 1960, the FWFHOF has inspired and educated anglers and serves as the authority and repository for all fresh water fishing records. The FWFHOF also recognizes those men and women who have made significant and lasting contributions to the sport of fresh water fishing through its Hall of Fame Program.
